Common Sandpiper

Physical characteristics and behaviour: The Common Sandpiper is easily recognised by its constant teetering motion, repeatedly moving the rear body and tail up and down while standing on the ground or at a river edge. This movement helps maintain balance and is a characteristic field mark. Plumage: The upperparts are pale grey-brown and the belly is white. A distinctive white wedge extends upward in front of the folded wing near the throat and shoulder and remains noticeable in flight. Habitat: It strongly favours riverbanks, rocky shores and lakes. Its plumage blends closely with the sand and stones of waterside habitats, providing effective camouflage.
