Biodiversity

Who We Are

Climate.KRD is a bilingual initiative documenting the animals, plants, and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. We bring together field observations, public data, and mapping tools to make the region's biodiversity visible, searchable, and easier to protect.

Mission

To document, map, and share open data on Kurdistan's wildlife and habitats so that researchers, policymakers, and communities can make informed decisions about conservation.

Vision

A Kurdistan Region where biodiversity data is openly available in both English and Kurdish, and where every Key Biodiversity Area has the recognition and protection it needs.

Study Area

Our current focus spans the governorates of Erbil, Duhok, Sulaymaniyah, and Halabja, covering a wide range of habitats from the Zagros foothills to the Mesopotamian plains.

Kurdistan Foundation

Kurdistan Foundation

Kurdistan Foundation is the parent organization behind Climate.KRD — a Kurdistan Region organization dedicated to empowering individuals and communities through skills-building, cultural pride, economic opportunity, and active citizenship. Climate.KRD is one of several entities under the Foundation, each carrying that mission into a different part of Kurdish life; ours focuses that work on protecting Kurdistan's natural environment and biodiversity.
