Physical characteristics and behaviour: A medium-sized bunting, about 16–19 centimetres long, with mostly pale brown plumage marked by darker streaks that provide camouflage among crops, grain and dry grass. Its thick, strong bill is adapted for cracking grain and plant seeds. Song behaviour: Males often perch on exposed rocks, posts or wires and sing loudly to mark territory and attract females. The song is commonly described as a series of short, rapid notes. Habitat and distribution: It favours open country, fields, pastures and mountain edges. In Kurdistan its song is easily heard in plains and valleys during spring and summer. It spends much of its time on or near the ground but chooses a conspicuous perch for singing.
