Photo 44. Physical characteristics: A small plover, about 14–15 centimetres long. Its most important identification feature is the bright yellow orbital ring around the eye. The upperparts are grey-brown for camouflage among stones, the underparts are white, and a thick black breast band and neck marking contrast with the white chin. Habitat and behaviour in Kurdistan: It favours open ground, especially riverbanks, reservoirs and sandy or fine-gravel areas, and is regularly seen along Kurdistan’s rivers. It is known for a run-and-stop feeding style: it runs several quick steps, stops suddenly and moves its head while watching for prey or insects.
